Brenda Usher's Story
Life
I got married when I was 33 after having completed my Ph.D. in French at Stanford University. I had my one and only child, a girl, at 35. Three years ago she graduated from Harvard University. After working for Wells Fargo in S.F. as a Financial Analyst, she has decided she wants to be an actor. She and I are writing a screenplay together. I have recently separated from my husband of 27 years and am in the process of divorcing. I'm currently working for a nonprofit, East Bay Colleg Fund, that awards big scholarships to graduates of Oakland public high schools. I studied classiscal voice for years and am singing with the Oakland Symphony Chorus. I learned how to play the piano as an adult. Creative writing has been an endeavor ever since I can remember. l in the 10K road race in Australia a few years back. I am back to running roughly 6 miles through the hills every other day and sometimes with my daughter. I play tennis once a week with a very dear friend. I have done some communnity acting, have written 2 plays, and did a formal reading of "Blood Types". Among other things I enjoy using my hands skillfully. I was a pathetic "square" in high school and am still as shy as ever. Anyone out there remember me?
College
I'm keeping it simple: I went to Cal Berkeley and graduated in 1968. I worked in the Undergraduate Admissions Office for 2 years following graduation. I then entered graduate school at Cal State in Hayward after been disillusioned with discrimination in the workplace and earned an M.A. Various professors encouraged me to go for a Ph.D., and so I applied and was accepted to Stanford University. I received my Ph.D. degree in 1978.
